Automotive Cables

Serving the Automotive Industry

Components used in the automotive industry are highly regulated—vehicle components and parts must be able to withstand harsh environments, corrosive chemicals, impact, heat, and abrasion, among many other things.

Due to the high risks inherent in a component failure, vehicle parts are held to exceptionally high standards. Automotive wire harnesses and cable assemblies are no exception.

At Consolidated Electronic Wire & Cable, we ensure all of our automotive products meet and exceed industry standards and regulations. With over 100 years of experience, we are highly qualified to produce a wide range of automotive cables and assemblies for a variety of vehicles. Our ISO 9001:2015 certified facility follows rigorous quality control guidelines to provide the best products and services in the industry.

Automotive Industry Challenges

Cables and wires used in the auto industry are specifically engineered to meet industry standards and regulations. Since automotive parts are regularly exposed to extreme temperatures, chemical solvents, moisture, and abrasive interactions, cables and wires must be manufactured to standard. With the number of different vehicles on the market, it is common to encounter nonstandard equipment and fixtures and out-of-date components, so manufacturers of customized automotive components must be fully aware of automotive industry requirements and limitations.

Industry Standards

To ensure the safety of the millions of drivers on the road each day, a number of organizations have been established to regulate the quality of automotive products.

SAE International provides a Technical Standards Development Program that has been determining regulatory standards for the automotive, aerospace, marine, and other transportation industries for more than 100 years. With more than 127,000 members, SAE consists of a worldwide network of engineers and scientists who develop reasonable technical standards for motion technology. They continuously adjust these standards as modern technology advances and evolves within the mobility industry.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is an organization under the purview U.S. Department of Transportation dedicated to regulating the safety of motor vehicles. Established in 1970, the NHTSA is responsible for establishing minimum motor vehicle performance standards, enforcing vehicle safety regulations, and researching traffic safety. They check the safety of motor vehicle design, construction, and performance to reduce the risk of death or injury due to motor vehicle crashes.

The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, also established in the 1970s, is a set of national fuel efficiency standards dedicated to the establishment of economic fuel usage to reduce emissions. These standards are regulated by the NHTSA and are updated to reflect the changing and growing market of hybrid and electric vehicles.

To make sure vehicle cables and wires are manufactured to the highest quality standards, it is essential to have a supplier who maintains an up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and regulations. At Consolidated Electric, we are dedicated to providing top-of-the-line products that meet or exceed all industry standards, and with the use of hybrid and electric vehicles projected to grow by 20–30% by 2025, we understand the value of innovation and regulatory compliance in an evolving market.
